  • 10 commandments of systems management by Simon Close from UK TUG
  •   The Ten Commandments of Systems Management
    • Thou shalt not be reactive
    • Thou shalt seek executive sponsorship
    • Thou shalt not take the name of Systems Management in vain
    • Thou shalt not consider technology to be enough
    • Thou shalt not steal; but rather share ideas with the user community
    • Thou shalt keep software current and have a proven patch strategy
    • Thou shalt build a team of dedicated, passionate and committed disciples
    • Thou shalt not keep quiet; but exploit and sell
    • Thou shalt not enforce a 'one size fits' all policy
    • Thou shalt not kill your Tivoli account team

  • IBM to acquire Candle Corp., software firm
  •   IBM says it has agreed to acquire Candle Corporation, a privately held software and consulting company based in El Segundo, CA. Financial details were not disclosed.

"Candle brings award-winning infrastructure management expertise and technology to the IBM software portfolio," said Steve Mills, senior vice president and group executive of IBM Software Group. "Together we will provide customers with powerful capabilities for managing end-to-end infrastructure, processes and applications, which are key requirements for the on demand operating environment." Combining the two companies will offer our customers a more comprehensive set of solutions, which will enable IT to deliver greater business value."

Some of the areas that users will benefit from are the integration of Candle monitoring tools to TBSM (Tivoli Business Systems Manager) specially in the mainframe arena and the real time monitoring capabilities of Omegamon products for provisioning and other areas.

  • IBM and Cisco : A new model for enterprise security
  •   As part of their long-standing strategic alliance, IBM and Cisco are collaborating on a new model for enterprise security designed to help businesses tackle their top security challenges and reduce costs. This collaboration will include the integration of their products and the creation of an integrated security architecture that will span every critical point of business computing - from laptops to corporate data. This standards-based approach to cyber security can help simplify security, reduce implementation and administration costs, and bolster business productivity.
