Market and Technology Insights

This past August, we announced a series of new initiatives being implemented within the user community: 1) member profiling; 2) community generated content; and 3) market and technology insights. The results of our market and technology insights for 3Q'09 which focused on virtualization, service management and green computing are complete and can be viewed here.

Summary of key findings:
Virtualization
  • Over 2/3rds of respondents have either implemented or are currently implementing virtualization
  • Server consolidation is the leading driver for virtualization, followed by development & testing and failover/high availability
  • Leading brands considered are VMware, IBM and Microsoft
Service Management
  • The highest priority driving adoption of service management is managing the risks associated with change, followed by improving the reliability and accessibility of data
Green Computing
  • Over 40% of IT organizations have a strategy to reduce the amount of energy consumed in the data center
  • But less than a third of those organizations that have an IT energy strategy actively monitor the amount of energy consumed by the data center

We've started our 4Q research and we're focusing on monitoring end user applications and storage management. If you have experience in any of these areas and would like to contribute, we'd like to hear from you. As a special incentive, we'll be offering a voucher for free certification testing to the first 25 end user interviewees (one per company) and a 50% voucher to respondents of our web survey! Please contact Suzanne Klein for details.

"Do You Have a GPS?"
Author: David Murray, President of the Carolinas TUG and member of the Global Tivoli User Group council
I was driving down the road the other day with my wife. Destination was a little restaurant that we had not been to in quite awhile. As we were motoring along I came upon a detour which caused my course to change and for me to be rerouted. As this was going on I ended up in a part of town that I had never been in before and I started wondering where I was. Of course the next question is where am I going and am I going to get to my original destination? Fortunately I was able to use a few devices at my disposal (GPS and a trusty map tucked in the glove box) and I was able to find my way to my destination.

As I contemplated that situation I have many time found myself in the same type of situation in the world of Enterprise System Management. This particular practice now encompasses so many different parts and they are all changing very quickly and in many cases very dramatically. So I ask myself.. click here to read more
