Dynamic Infrastructure Virtual Forum on March 3-4, 2009! Without leaving your desk, you can expand your horizons and learn how IBM can help them make your infrastructure as dynamic as business itself.

Webinar: Beyond Backup Reporting
- Data Protection Services - Delivering Results with Bocada Enterprise and TSM 6Date: March 31, 2009 at 9:00 AM PT

Pulse Conference - What everyone should know!
IBM strategy for Pulse 2009 was focused around "Dynamic infrastructure". It refers to growing intelligence in the data center and client assets and technologies that allows for smarter usage and management of those assets while being able to provision and throttle their usage more dynamically. The easiest way to describe it is usually through an example. Consider the utility company that provides the power to industrial and residential clients. By replacing the power meters with digital intelligent meters, the utility company can communicate with meters through RF or other protocols from centralized locations and throttle the usage of power down when no one is home and increase it back up in the evening when people come home. This capability can reduce the energy bill for individual customers and the utility companies to save money and help the environment. Obviously, the same paradigm can be applied to other industries as well.

At the heart of providing the dynamic infrastructure capabilities are Maximo products that provides IT and non-IT asset management, Configuration Management System using federated CMDB to provide the centralized knowledge management to automate various processes and event management and monitoring capabilities that check the hearbeat of this dynamic infrastructure at all times.

There was a new product announcement that had direct association with dynamic infrastructure strategy. This product is called Tivoli Service Automation Manager (TSAM). This is a new buzzword you may hear and I wanted to include an introduction of it. This product addresses the service request management, then enables creation and usage packages using pre-determined workflows to deploy the packages (using provisioning manager) and also perform the management of the deployed package after it is implemented.

For more information about the new strategy and solutions refer to the presentations in the Pulse Agenda Builder.

Hints and Tips from the Pulse Conference
As usual, there were solution presentations that announced new releases and additional capabilities which you can explore when reviewing presentation slides for each product. However, there were some capabilities that I wanted to highlight. One of the new trends in monitoring and business service management is the "Predictive Analysis or Predictive monitoring". IBM's strategy is to begin to introduce this capability in each one of their products such as: ITM, TBSM, Omnibus, Impact and others. This capability will use standard mechanisms across the monitoring and BSM portfolio to work together and amalgamate this intelligence in a centralized view to present overall impact to a business. Those capabilities will also be highlighted in each product's roadmap.

One nice move by IBM was the inclusion of Tivoli Performance Analyzer product as part of ITM. This means that you don't need to pay for this product to purchase anymore and it will be shipped as part of ITM 6.2.2 around July timeframe.

TPA uses Tivoli data Warehouse to perform historical trending of resource usage like CPU, capacity, etc ... TPA's historical analysis coupled with more real-time predictive analysis by each product is a major step toward realization of the dynamic infrastructure strategy.

Announcement - Tivoli Storage Manager 6
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) has been a leader in helping organizations protect, retain and assure availability of their most important asset, their data, for more than 15 years. The TSM family is a truly comprehensive, enterprise-wide data protection and recovery solution, with features including: Backup / Restore, Archive / Retrieve, Continuous Data Protection (CDP), Disaster Recovery, HSM / Information Lifecycle Management, Application Protection, Database Protection, Bare Machine Recovery and Robust Remote Office Recovery.

On February 5, 2009, IBM proudly took the next big step in the mission of keeping our clients ahead of the tidal wave of data with the announcement of Tivoli Storage Manager 6.

Tivoli Storage Manager 6 offers a wide array of dramatic improvements that include: simplified deployment and management; increased scalability, availability and performance; built-in data de-duplication; and improved integration with VMware and Microsoft environments and with NetApp and IBM N series NAS systems. These improvements provide the basis for a unified recovery management platform that delivers improved Quality of Service (QoS) levels.

Tivoli Storage Manager 6 customers will be able to manage more data, more efficiently, with less infrastructure. To learn more, please visit the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager web page.

What one person at the Pulse conference took away about TSM6:
  • It is important to have a test environment for this upgrade as it is a major release and changes the TSM database from it's previous format to DB2.
  • Upgrade of TSM database in previous releases to TSM6, estimated time is 5 - 7 GB per hour. If you backup databases that do archive logging to TSM, this could have a significant impact on your environment. Advanced planning would need to be done to accommodate an extended outtage.
  • Need minimum of 8 GB memory
  • Do not upgrade immediately with Version 6 if you are using backupsets or NDMP backups, there are fixes coming for those processes.
