NEW Tivoli solutions for the Mid-market to hit
the streets in March!
When it comes to IT solutions that can support their
business goals, midsized businesses can find them in a
bit of a bind. They have the same goals as much larger
organizations: maximum data protection, availability
and security, as well as limited time and resources to
deal with IT management. But they typically have
smaller IT budgets fewer IT resources and less IT staff
available. That's why Tivoli has developed new IT
management solutions specifically for midsized
businesses. The IBM Tivoli Express portfolio
provides easy-to-install, affordable storage, security,
availability, software distribution and inventory IT
management solutions built with practical experience
gained from working with midsized customers, leading
business partners and industry experts.
The new offerings include: Tivoli Storage Manager
Express, Tivoli Identity Manager Express, Tivoli
Monitoring Express, and Tivoli Provisioning Manager
Express

IBM software needs your input!
As an industry leader, we at IBM know that software is
only as useful as your ability to apply it to your solution
quickly, effectively and on your terms. Whatever your
business, your time, resources and efforts all depend
on your software's effectiveness from the initial
installation and configuration to long-term operations.

10th Anniversary - IBM acquired
Tivoli
Ten years ago in March, IBM paid $743M for Tivoli
Systems Inc, an Austin-based software start-up
specializing in systems management software for
distributed client/server networks of PCs.
While the acquisition of Tivoli strengthened IBM's ability
to manage PC-based distributed systems, the company
was looking to the future, recognizing that
revolutionary changes were underway for the industry.
One year later, in 1997, Louis V. Gerstner announced
the debut of a major strategic campaign built around
the IBM-coined term "e-business." The idea behind e-
business was that the networked world -- with the
Internet at its core -- would soon change the way the
world communicates and does business on the
network. IBM had foreseen the switch from the
personal computer to the World Wide Web as the
center of focus for the technology industry.
Today, Tivoli software goes well beyond monitoring
companies' PCs and systems. As IBM predicted years
ago, the network has become the most important area
of focus. With the proliferation of mobile networked
devices and the convergence of VoIP, audio, and video
services delivered over the Internet, companies'
networks are growing increasingly complex. IBM's Tivoli
software unit is now focused on helping companies
manage these sophisticated IT environments and
deliver new network-based and IT management
services to customers, employees and partners.

Availability and BSM products
Check out the A&BSM (Availability &
Business Systems Management) Enablement Best
Practices Website. The new release of IBM Tivoli
Monitoring 6.1 is the foundation for integrating
mainframe systems, distributed systems, applications,
and the Tivoli Enterprise Console by using the Tivoli
Enterprise Portal. This site has been established to
provide best practices information on ITM 6.1 to enable
customers to move forward in their adoption and
deployment of the release.
HINTS and TIPS
For those clients who are interested in implementing
the Tivoli Monitoring for Messaging and Collaboration,
check the Limited Availability patch (LA20) for ITMMC.
Recently we had some significant performance issues
with implementing Domino in AIX environment. After
weeks of problem diagnostics between client and IBM
the root of the problem was identified and LA 20 was
developed by IBM to address the performance and
availability problem. The readme file for LA20 identifies
the nature of the problem. For the more News please book mark our TUG News page

| In our own words - GTUG council | | |
In today's complex and dynamic IT environments,
changes are occurring on a daily basis. In addition, IT
is moving toward automating services and processes as
opposed to individual system components. In order to
manage this ever growing and complex environment,
there needs to be automated means of discovering
these changes and provide audit reports in a
centralized repository. Major systems management
vendors, recognizing the need, are providing solutions
to automate IT service management including auto
discovery of the various configuration items and
associated changes as laid out by ITIL processes. IBM
acquired Collation during the 4th quarter of 2005 to
address auto-discovery and auditing issues. The
following is IBM's plan for integrating Collation with
other Tivoli products.
- Introduce Tivoli Application Dependency
Discovery manager (TADDM) by first quarter 2006
which is primarily rebranding of the product with minor
changes as an stand-alone solution. -
DONE
- Integrate TADDM with CCMDB by June/July
timeframe. Some of the significant changes will be
using Collation GUI to access CCMDB information and
augmentation of CCMDB with additional configuration
items (CIs) that are collected by Collation.
- Until companies are ready to embrace IT service
management solutions including CMDB, the Collation
insignia product can be used to discover, audit and
troubleshoot changes within IT environment, which in
itself provides significant value.
TADDM out of the box has variety of discovery
sensors. The matrix below provides list of those
sensors.
