THIS User Group grows from strength to strength! - European IBM Tivoli Security User Group (TAM , FIM & TIM), 11/12th May, Montpellier, France.
This was the 5th meeting of our growing community of security customers. We had a productive 2 day meeting with 55 people from 26 organizations across 14 European countries in attendance. The highlight of the meeting was the presentations by Ahold, Westpac, National Australia Group, Credit Suisse and SecurIT where they shared insights into their deployments. We had great support from the US security product management team which was used to good effect by the customers to discuss their requirements and issues. Web conferences are being planed for the rest of the year and this group plans on meeting in Barcelona in the April/May 2007 timeframe again. Details of the user group can be found at http://www.tivoli-ug.org/groups.php? groupid=150.

NEW TUG: Our newest Tivoli User Group, the Pittsburgh Tivoli User Group which just had it's first meeting on May 25th.

UPCOMING TUG meetings: The summer months are a slower time for many Tivoli User Groups; however, July and August become the months to start planning for the fall meetings check out the current schedule today.

    UPDATE on Website Resources

Have a question? Check out the community questions and answers using the Peer to Peer! Here is a prime example of a question asked: "I would like to use ITM and TEC to monitor BEA WebLogic server running on Solaris. Specifically, we want to monitor the process and the log files. How can this be achieved? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated." And the answer: "Normally you would use the tec log file adapter to monitor the syslog for messages relating to your app server. No filter is pre-built for this (to my knowledge) so you may need to do some tailoring. Process monitoring is a little easier you can use the results of a "ps -ef" when your app server is running to find the arguements to use for the process monitor. Tivoli also has an add-on specifially called Tivoli Monitoring for Web Services which may be better suited for you." Help populate the Peer to Peer with questions TODAY!

Looking for downloadable files/documentation to help you with your job? The Tivoli Information Exchange (TIE) could be your answer! In May the #1 download within the TIE was "Change Event Status" for Tivoli Enterprise Console. The winner of the most all- time most downloaded file is the "Simple ITM ASCII logfile adapter". We want to thank the over 750 individuals who visited the TIE and downloaded over 400 files last month. Since the formation of the TIE three years ago we have had almost 5,000 downloads! Check out the TIE today.

The longstanding IBM commitment to developing self-managing (or autonomic) technology continues at the operational management level, but now extends into the "out of the box" automated workflows in IBM Tivoli Process Managers.

The initial release of these new products includes three Process Managers each designed to help improve efficiency and effectiveness in managing IT processes.
    • The IBM Tivoli Release Management Process Manager expedites and automates processes related to server provisioning and patch deployment.
    • The IBM Tivoli Availability Management Process Manager helps improve problem resolution time and decrease the business impact of incidents.
    • The IBM Tivoli Storage Process Manager helps reduce costs by reclaiming storage space and reducing redundancy.

    HINTS and TIPS

    ITM6 agent remote configuration
Unlike TMF endpoints, ITM 6.1 agents are not designed to be remotely reconfigurable. However, through the Take Action ability it is possible to run a script on the agent system which will cause it to be reconfigured. Please refer to the TIE area of Tivoli user's group website for the associated scripts and documentation for this capability called "ITM6 agent remote configuration".

If you have hints and tips for any Tivoli products that you'd like posted in our next Newsletter send them to gtugcouncil@tivoli-ug.org.

  • In our own words - GTUG council
  •   17 members of the GTUG council came together May 23-25, 2006 for three days of product drill down education/roadmaps and giving feedback to Tivoli.
The topics included were: Tivoli Strategy, Tivoli Support, Change Configuration Management Database, IT Processors, Tivoli DataWarehouse, Tivoli Configuration Manager & Tivoli Provisioning Manager, IBM Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager, Tivoli Enterprise Console, NetView/Precision, Tivoli Business Systems Management/RAD, Tivoli Service Level Advisor, Storage Management/Tivoli Productivity Center and the Security Management suite.

Members who were able to make the GTUG council meeting:

Below are some comments and terminology that I, one of the members, picked up when having the annual Global Tivoli User's Group face-to-face meeting with IBM.

    • ITM 6.1 - As you may all know, this product is based on Candle technology. Its architecture is different from ITM 5 architecture based on framework. ITM 6 uses individual light agents for various monitoring capabilities (OS, MQ, WAS) as apposed to ITM 5 using a single fat agent. IBM lab results have indicated significant improvements with ITM 6 agent/management server over ITM5/gateway processing. You can be the judge of it when testing in your environment. However, you need to be cognizant of the architectural differences and ratio of number of agents per remote TEMS and remote TEMS per hub TEMS. Bottom line, you need to figure out the total number of agents you expect to deploy enterprise wide and work your way backwards in determining the number of Remote TEMS and hub TEMS/TEPS. You also need to do a sizing of your Tivoli data warehouse along with the retention period to come up with a server/storage configuration for TDW.
    • MOSWOS - This is terminology used by IBM to manage their own management infrastructure. It stands for Managing Our Stuff With Our Stuff. As you will see in subsequent fixpacks and sparklers, IBM will introduce management of ITM 6 and TEC environment using ITM 6 technology.
    • OMP - It stands for Operational Management Products. These are the products that do the actual instrumentation and monitoring of resources and provide management data for various sources such as CMDB and TDW.
    • IBM is introducing and express version of ITM for small and medium businesses. If you purchase TADDM product for auto-discovery and CMDB integration, it will ship with ITM express for limited monitoring capabilities.
    • Micromuse products have generally had real-time data focus keeping a lot of data in cash. However, IBM solutions have generally focused on collecting a lot of historical data. The marriage of Micromuse products with IBM products should provide a rich set of both real-time and historical data for problem determination and trending analysis. More information is coming out soon as you will need to understand the entitlements for various acquisitions IBM has made including Micromuse.
