Happy New Year!
Onbehalf of the Global Tivoli User Group
(GTUG) council we say "Happy New Year". As we
celebrated 5 years of online service for the
user community in 2008, we are excited to go
into 2009 with a new website redesign.Thank
you to Group Intelligence, Inc., our service
provider, for their support and guidance in
our website. We are looking forward to an
oustanding year with your involvement!Did you see our "face lift"?
The Tivoli user community website, www.tivoli-ug.org, went through a new transformation in December including these many improvements:
Take 3 minutes and take our semi-annual Tivoli User Community (TUC) experience survey. Your input will help shape our offerings and services. So please participate if you have not done so already. Have you recently changed companies or
have some new contact information?

Stay Connected in 2009! More User Groups
will be utilizing the online meeting
capability!
The TUC community now offers User Group leaders the ability to conduct meetings over a secure web and phone conferencing network. This capability allows members to stay engaged between scheduled meetings for a fraction of the cost and time it takes to organize a face to face meeting. Any member can attend a Virtual User Group meeting; all you need is a phone and computer and be registered as a member of the user group hosting the meeting. If there are no local User Groups in your area, or your interest is in a product area not often covered by your local group, then attending a Virtual User Group meeting may be a great option for you. |

Rising energy costs have been stunting
business growth for years. But the stakes
involved in controlling energy emissions go
far beyond controlling energy costs. Hear
the global and historic perspective from
analyst Stephen Stokes, VP, Business and
Climate Change, AMR Research. Al Zollar, GM,
Tivoli Software, provides the
business-level view of the tremendous
inefficiencies that Tivoli software can rein
in - and how IBM uses its own assets as a
leading innovator of green practices. Tivoli
CTO and VP of IBM Autonomic Computing Alan
Ganek gets specific about applying the
visibility, control and automation inherent
in IBM Service Management solutions not only
to IT and network operations centers, but
also to just about any infrastructure that
plugs in, uses batteries or runs on fuel. Click here to replay the

Happy Holidays to all members!
We want to thank each of you for your participation in the user community in 2008. Here are some good results:
During one of the GTUG council monthly
meetings, IBM presented their deployment
strategy for Tivoli software. Below are the
comments and summary of discussion:
The big question from Tivoli with regard to
deployment was what makes a product more
consumable?
1. Many of the newer product additions are hard to setup due to the large number of dependent components and no installation framework. The Netcool products have no in-place upgrade and must be installed as new products then migrated to. Other products have a dependency on middleware or databases that require multiple groups to get involved in the installation. Consistency of the involved applications is not guaranteed for this set tools. Some products will not work properly if not install by the proper user ID but that is not evident until after the installation. Security issues (root/administrator authority versus user authority) make the installation process harder and harder. To summarize, compared to the current installation process in Tivoli Framework a lot of customers are complaining about the current upgrades in Netcool. They confirm our key takeaways. 2. The version control of the supporting
software was also discussed. Just as in the
old framework model where the user had to
worry about all the deferent products working
together after being upgraded that problem
has not gone away.
3. A large part of the discussion was based
on Tivoli's desire to ship monitoring
appliances. The concern here was around
security both of the application and the base
OS. Tivoli's thoughts were around an
application bundle that could be installed on
a users base OS install.

Zaven from the GTUG council:
You should look at the IBM License Metric Tool (LMT) which is a simplified version of what was TLCM (Tivoli License Compliance Manager) for IBM Software. It is targeted primarily at customers with PVU products, and subcapacity to a greater extent. It is free and available to all Passport Advantage customers. It was derived from the TLCM code base so the recognition and DB are quite similar. The one thing it lacks is the comparison to license definitions. For that you still need TLCM. Here's the LMT Planning & Install Guide: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v3r1/index.jsp?toc=/com.ibm.itlm.doc/toc.xml LMT Download Info: http://www.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca/7/897/ENUS208-197/index.html I am trying to get some more information about which products it checks for, but the documentation mentions loading the IBM Software Catalog, which if the same one that CIT (Common Inventory Technology) uses, should include Tivoli products. Second, I need to see how similar the DB is, and if any TCR (Tivoli Common Reporting) reports have been created yet. Announcement
