Got Virtual User Groups?

Author: David Murray, President of the Carolinas TUG and member of the Global Tivoli User Group council

Well it is time again for the in your own words column. As I was considering what to write about I was thinking of all the things that have happened recently. Pulse comes to you was here and I hope you had a chance to attend one of the meetings. We are also very busy as a Global Tivoli Users Group Council working on many issues and updates. I have mentioned many of them in the past.

While I considered these things I was sort of reminiscing about how things have changed. Tivoli has evolved in many was as has our industry itself. It seems to me that I was less busy when I specialized in a few Tivoli products instead of the requirements that I now have to be a specialist in most of them. I find that I am pulled in many directions and that many of the products intersect with the others so I need to involve more and more disciplines and products to do my job.

That being said I am always looking for more and better ways to get information. One of the things that came to mind was the virtual user groups that are coming to being. The interesting thing is I can attend these without leaving my office. No travel cost and less time commitment. I am looking into that so I can be involved in more groups around different areas since I have no chance of traveling to all of them.

I would highly encourage everyone to check them out. Who knows, you may be exposed to some new disciplines and learn some new skills. At the very least you will learn something new about maybe storage, security, automation, or Maximo. I am excited to test these virtual groups out and see how it goes. As always the best way to improve the community you are in is to attend and contribute.

And speaking of contributing to the greater good of the user community members, I'd like to encourage you to show your pride in Tivoli and create a video by August 16th, read more details here.
