HINTS &
TIPS
A GTUG member’s advice on ITM 6.1: having been
involved with the implementation of ITM 6.1 at a
large scale, we have found a few issues that can be
helpful to those embarking on ITM 6.1 implementation.
- There are documentation issues not clearly
identifying the password limitations and providing
unclear messages returning from SOAP interface
forcing you to do more verifications
- Customers will end up re-visiting their network
configuration, port assignments and bandwidth
usage
- It is a must to be at fixpack02 level to get some
necessary functionality. The recommendation is to go
to fixpack03 which fixes some FP02 bugs
IBM
Tivoli Identity Manager Implementation Best
Practices and Information
Implementing an enterprise identity management
solution is never a trivial undertaking. There are
many facets to these solutions, not all of which are
readily apparent when you begin one of these
implementation projects. One of the ways to
improve the efficiency of your project and optimize
your results is to be as familiar as possible with all of
the sources of information and assistance that are
available to you. IBM offers assistance in many
forms including experienced consulting services, a
wide variety of training offerings that include
classroom and web-based training formats, and a
multitude of redbooks, whitepapers, and other
documentation that provides extensive tips and
suggestions to help your implementation project be
as smooth and successful as possible. The following
is an excellent place to start when looking for
information of this nature: IBM
Tivoli Identity Manager Implementation Best
Practices and Information.

| Tivoli Advisor – Feature |
| |
Issue #9 of the Tivoli Advisor has just been
released and within the publication is an article titled, “Unveiling
Infrastructure
Discover”. We would encourage everyone
to read this article as “Gary Hamilton [from IBM]
takes a closer look at the “IBM Tivoli
Development Whitepaper" focusing on the
November 2005 acquisition of the Collation’s IT
Discovery technology, now formally known as IBM
Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager
(TADDM). This technology forms a critical
component of IBM Tivoli’s ITSM strategy. Since the
GA release of the IBM Change and Configuration
Management Database (CCMDB), the TADDM product
has been renamed Configuration Discovery and
Tracking (CDT), but for the purpose of this
document, we will continue to use the term TADDM.”

Thoughts on IBM/Tivoli’s Acquisition of
MRO.
Today, asset management primarily deals with IT
assets. However, an increasing need is arising in
managing non-IT assets along with IT assets using
the same infrastructure. Customers, like yourselves,
across all industries today manage their enterprise or
industrial assets using a distinct and separate
infrastructure from the one they use to manage their
traditional IT assets. In reality, however, redundant
management infrastructures actually complicate the
goals of keeping costs and complexity down and
aligning assets with business goals. In addition,
enterprise assets such as manufacturing plants,
transportation equipment, and facilities are starting
to take on more IT-like traits, particularly with the
proliferation of RFID, embedded chips, sensors,
detectors, and IP addressing. This means that IT
management, which today is applied to traditional IT
assets such as software, servers, and network
elements, can be applied increasingly to industrial or
enterprise assets, too. Under a single management
infrastructure and common set of tools, wasteful
redundancy can be eliminated and provide better
service management across all asset categories.
Acquisition of MRO in conjunction with acquisition of
Isogon and CIMS lab will enable tracking of IT and
non-IT assets, their license usage and usage based
accounting to charge the customers for their
services. We are waiting to see how the MRO and
the other acquisitions will further enhance the Tivoli
set of products. An interesting note is that MRO does
have a service desk component within it’s product
portfolio.
